Steeped in history, it has been claimed that the area was inhabited over 20,000 years ago, with inhabitants dating back to the pre-pyramids era.
The Territory's capital Canberra was purpose-built in 1908 after a dispute between the two larger cities Melbourne and Sydney, to decide who would be the nation's capital. A compromise was met and the planned city, Canberra, was built in-between.
