What is a Parent Visa?

Australian parent visas are a great option for parents who have a child who is a permanent Australian resident or citizen or eligible New Zealand citizen. Most applicants must be sponsored by their child. The sponsor needs to have lived lawfully in Australia for the two years immediately before the application is lodged.

There are several categories of parent visas:

Contributory Parent (Permanent) Visa

What it entitles you to:

Permanent residence in Australia, if your child is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen who is settled in Australia.

Terms and Conditions:

  • are sponsored
  • meet the balance-of-family test
  • are prepared to pay higher visa application charges for faster processing

Further Information

This visa subclass requires you to meet the Balance of Family Test. This test includes all of you and your partner's children, including step-children and adopted children. You will meet the balance of family requirement if either at least half of your children live permanently in Australia or more of your children live permanently in Australia than in any other country. This shows you have a valid connection to the country and the nature of your relationship with the children is not assessed here.

Sponsorship - usually by your child in Australia who must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen. A higher second visa application charge must be paid -currently $43,600 per person - which is updated on 1st July each year. Additionally a ten-year assurance of support is required with a $10,000 bond for the principal applicant and $4,000 for each other adult applicant.

Contributory Parent (Temporary) Visa

What it entitles you to:

Two-year temporary Residence in Australia, if your child is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen who is settled in Australia.

Terms and Conditions:

  • are sponsored
  • meet the balance-of-family test
  • Pay a second visa application charge is $29,130 per person.

Further Information

This visa subclass requires you to meet the Balance of Family Test. This test includes all of you and your partner's children, including step-children and adopted children. You will meet the balance of the family requirement if either at least half of your children live permanently in Australia or more of your children live in Australia than in any other country. This shows you have a valid connection to the country but the nature of your relationship with the children is not assessed here.

There is no assurance of support required for this visa. Visa holders can apply for a permanent 143 visa before the expiry of the 173 (temporary visa) and a further application charge of $19,420 per person is then payable. A 10-year assurance of support is required of $10,000 for the principal applicant and $4,000 for each other adult applicant for the permanent stage.

Non-Contributory Parent Visa

Permanent Residence in Australia, if your child is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen who is settled in Australia.

Terms and Conditions:

  • are sponsored

  • are prepared to wait in a queue before your visa can be decided.

Further Information

There can be long waiting times of up to 30 years before this visa is approved.
This visa subclass requires you to meet the Balance of Family Test. This test includes all of you and your partner's children, including step-children and adopted children. You will meet the balance of the family requirement if either at least half of your children live permanently in Australia or more of your children live in Australia than in any other country. This shows you have a valid connection to the country and the nature of your relationship with the children is not assessed.

Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa

What it entitles you to:

A temporary visa for up to 5 years, which can be renewed once for a further 5 years.

Terms and Conditions:

  • Must be sponsored by an eligible biological, adoptive or step-child.
  • Provide evidence to access to funds
  • Provide evidence of health insurance
  • Meet health, character and national security requirements.

Further Information

This visa provides parents with a pathway to temporarily reunite with their children and grandchildren in Australia. The sponsor must be An Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen and they must submit a sponsorship application, which if approved the Visa applicant must then lodge their visa application within 6 months.
